Ticket Gate (自動改札口 - Jidō Kaisatsuguchi)
The automated gate that checks your ticket or IC card to let you onto the train platforms. Japanese ticket gates are world-famous for their high-speed processing (up to 80 people per minute) to prevent rush-hour bottlenecking.
Developed by Japanese engineers at Omron in the late 1960s. The world's first fully automated station ticketing system was implemented in 1967 at Senri-yama Station in Osaka to alleviate severe rush hour congestions.
If using a paper ticket, insert it into the slot, walk through as the gate opens, and make sure to retrieve it from the output slot on the other side. For IC cards, simply tap the touch pad on top of the gate.
