Suica & Pasmo IC Cards (交通系ICカード - IC Kādo)
The contactless transit IC smart cards (Suica/Pasmo) used to ride trains, subways, and buses nationwide. Simply tap at the ticket gates. They can also be used as electronic wallets at vending machines and convenience stores.
Introduced in 2001 by JR East. The name stands for 'Super Urban Intelligent Card' and sounds like 'sui-sui' (smoothly/swiftly in Japanese), combined with 'Suica' (watermelon), which is why the card has a green theme.
Tap the card or your smartphone (via Apple Wallet/Google Wallet) flat onto the blue glowing sensor panel at the ticket gate. When the balance is low, top it up (charge) with cash at ticket machines inside or outside stations.
Which is the correct action to take when passing an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) through a ticket gate?
