Temple Praying Method (お寺の参拝方法 - Otera no sanpai)
The praying method at Buddhist temples is structurally different from Shinto shrines. The crucial distinction is that you must never clap your hands. Instead, bow silently with your palms clasped together (Gassho).
Stemming from ancient Indian Buddhism, joining palms (Gassho) represents unity. The right hand represents the Buddha, and the left hand represents the self; combining them symbolizes becoming one with Buddha and purifying the mind.
Bow once at the temple gate. Purify yourself at the Temizuya. Bathe in incense smoke if available. Toss a coin at the main hall, clasp your hands silently (no clapping!), bow slightly to pray, and finish with a deep bow.
