Temizuya Washing Ritual

Purifying Hands at Shrine Pools (手水舎の正しい作法 - Temizuya)

Temizuya Washing Ritual

⛩️ Spiritual Meaning & Protocol

The purification ritual performed at the stone water basin ('Temizuya') located along shrine paths to cleanse your body and soul before presenting prayers to Shinto deities.

📜 Sacred Origins

Evolved from the traditional Shinto 'Misogi' (full-body ocean purification ritual). To make it highly convenient for casual daily visitors, it was simplified into a rapid hand-and-mouth rinse before climbing the main steps.

🚨 Holy Taboos & Correct Manners

Using only one scoop of water: 1. Rinse your left hand. 2. Switch hands, rinse your right hand. 3. Pour water into your left palm and rinse your mouth (never drink directly from the ladle!). 4. Clean the ladle neck, and place it down.

お参りをする前に、手水舎でお水を使って両手と口を綺麗に清めましょう。 / 柄杓に直接口をつけるのは、非常に汚く失礼な行為なので絶対にやってはいけませんよ。
🔊 Before presenting our prayers, let's purify our hands and mouth with the cold water at the Temizuya basin. / Putting your lips directly on the ladle is considered unsanitary and highly offensive, so never do it.
