The environmental rule requiring all Japanese retail shops to charge a small fee (around 3 to 5 yen) for plastic carrier bags. Shoppers are highly encouraged to carry their own reusable eco-bag ('Eco-baggu').
Enacted by the Japanese government in July 2020 as a sweeping environmental policy to cut down marine plastic pollution and reduce carbon emissions. It turned carrying your own eco-bag into a near-universal daily habit.
At checkout, staff will ask if you need a bag. If you have your own, say 'Fukuro wa irimasen' (I don't need a bag) or tap your eco-bag. If you need one, request: 'Fukuro o ichimai kudasai' (One plastic bag, please) and pay 3-5 yen.
