Yukata Etiquette

Yukata (浴衣の着方 - Yukata no Kitata)

Yukata Etiquette

📖 Meaning & Etiquette Guides

A lightweight cotton kimono worn at hot spring resorts and summer festivals. The most critical rule is folding the left side OVER the right side (right side against your body first). Folding it the opposite way (right-over-left) is reserved for funerals and is considered extremely taboo.

💡 Cultural Origin & Context

Originated from 'yukatabira', which Nobles in the Heian period wore to prevent steam burns in traditional sweat baths. By the Edo period, it evolved into lightweight loungewear for ordinary citizens post-bath.

💬 Ryokan Attendant Dialogue

Politely ask the room attendant or front staff to guide you on how to wear your yukata correctly.
