冬 (ふゆ) means "winter," the coldest season of the year. You use it when talking about cold weather, snow, or winter holidays. For instance, 北海道の冬は雪がたくさん降ります。(Hokkaidō no fuyu wa yuki ga takusan furimasu.) means "It snows a lot in Hokkaido in winter."
