Further visiting Risshaku-ji (Yamadera) in Yamagata, Basho felt a deep silence as if the voices of cicadas were soaking into the surrounding rocks in the quiet mountains. Here, he wrote: 'Ah, the silence! / Soaking into the rocks / the voice of the cicada,' expressing a wonderful moment where nature's sound and silence completely unified.
