Hanzo Aoyama passionately believed in the ideals of 'Hirata Kokugaku' (national learning), asserting that a restoration of imperial rule (returning politics to the Emperor) was necessary to rescue farmers and commoners suffering under the old feudal system of the Edo period. He purely dreamed: 'If the Tokugawa Shogunate falls and a new imperial government is established, Japan's old privilege system will be abolished, returning to a natural, ancient utopia.'
