'The Broken Commandment' (Hakai) is an immortal masterpiece of modern Japanese literature written by Toson Shimazaki during the Meiji period, depicting a youth's agony and self-liberation as he fights social discrimination. Segawa Ushimatsu, a primary school teacher in Shinshu, was born into a discriminated-against Buraku community. To survive in society, his father had given him the strict commandment: 'No matter what happens, never reveal your origin.'
