Arriving in the metropolis of Tokyo from the late Taisho to the early Showa period, Fumiko worked as a cafe waitress, a celluloid factory worker, and an office typist, leading a life of extreme poverty struggling even to find a few cents for daily food. Unable to pay rent and kicked out of apartments, shivering with hunger and cold daily, she continued to write down the realistic activities of humans at the very bottom of society in her diary.
