なぜ (naze) is an interrogative adverb, similar to どうして, used to ask about the reason or cause. It means 'why,' 'how come,' or 'the reason why' in English. While often interchangeable with どうして, なぜ can sometimes sound slightly more formal or direct when inquiring about reasons.
