楽(たの)しい気持(きも)ちは消(き)え、疲労感(ひろうかん)が増(ま)した

After the trolley had gone for a while, it arrived at its final destination. From there, Ryokichi had to walk back to the construction site. The return path, unlike the way there, was all uphill, and his legs became heavy. His earlier joyful feelings vanished before he knew it, and his usual sense of fatigue struck him again. It was as if riding the trolley itself had, on the contrary, increased his tiredness.
