女性(じょせい)の常子(つねこ)だけが亡くなり(なくなり)、生き残った(いきのこった)葉蔵(ようぞう)は深い(ふかい)罪悪感に(ざいあくかんに)苦しんだ

Finally in despair, Yozo met Tsuneko, a poor waitress at a Ginza cafe, and sympathized with each other's loneliness. The two threw themselves into the cold sea at Kamakura to commit suicide together. However, in an extremely ironic twist, only the woman, Tsuneko, died, and Yozo alone survived. This tragedy implanted a heavy sense of guilt in his heart that would never disappear in his lifetime.
