Learning of Mineko's marriage, Sanshiro tastes the sharp pain of heartbreak. On her wedding day, Sanshiro stands paralyzed in front of a painting modeled after Mineko, repeating the words 'Stray Sheep' over and over in his heart. It is an immortal masterpiece depicting the bittersweet end of youth, realizing that he himself was a 'stray sheep' lost in love and dreams in the giant metropolis. Today, the pond at Tokyo University is still affectionately called 'Sanshiro Pond'.
