Jihei did not have enough money to buy out Koharu (release her from debt), and was deeply distressed every day being insulted by a wealthy rival, Tahei, who tried to win her by force. Koharu also loved Jihei deeply, but was pressed with a painful choice, worried about his safety as he tried to die with her despite having no money.
