'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter' (Taketori Monogatari) is the 'oldest tale' in Japanese classical literature, written in the early Heian period. One day, an old man who lived by cutting bamboo (Taketori no Okina) found a single stalk of bamboo whose base was glowing brilliantly. When he cut inside, he found an exceptionally cute girl only about three inches (about 9 cm) tall inside.
