As the distance between him and Mineko closed, Sanshiro grew increasingly anxious, unable to grasp her true intentions. One day, she muttered the mysterious words 'stray sheep' to him. It was as if those words symbolized the young people who were losing sight of themselves in the torrent of modernity. Holding onto his unrequited feelings for Mineko, Sanshiro came to realize that he, too, was nothing more than a stray sheep.
