At the university, Sanshiro encounters Yojiro, a cynical yet tactful friend; Nonomiya, an eccentric science researcher conducting unique studies; and Professor Hirota, a grand intellectual who speaks of Western free individualism. The new thoughts and studies they discussed taught Sanshiro, raised within old rural morals, that the world is far broader and more complex than his imagination.
