There, Kazuko's younger brother Naoji returned, demobilized from the battlefields of the Sino-Japanese War. Suffering deeply in mind from his gruesome battlefield experiences, Naoji began frequenting the circle of Uehara, a decadent and bohemian writer in Tokyo, leading a chaotic 'decadent' life drowned in alcohol and drugs. Naoji was tormented by the despair: 'I cannot escape the prison of my old noble status.'
