JLPT N5 • GENERAL

助けたい気持ちはあったが、周囲の目を気にするあまり、声をかけることすらできなかった。

Shinnyo, the son of the priest at Ryusenji Temple, was a quiet boy who excelled in his studies. Due to a trivial misunderstanding that had once arisen between him and Midori, a cold silence had come to flow between the two. One rainy day, Shinnyo happens to break the strap of his clog in front of Midori's shop. Although Midori wants to help him, she is too conscious of the eyes around her to even call out to him. This frustrating yet painful rejection, born of their mutual awareness of each other, was the very height of the delicate psychology characteristic of adolescence.
