One day, the Lord ordered Yoshihide to paint a screen depicting 'Hell Screen' (Jigokuhen). As if standing on the brink of madness, Yoshihide began immersing himself in sketching gruesome scenes of Hell. His bizarre, extraordinary behavior—such as binding his disciples with chains and having them attacked by terrifying monstrous birds—demonstrated his obsession to spare no means for the completion of his painting. However, there was one scene he simply could not paint: the figure of a noble lady-in-waiting burning to death, writhing in agony inside a carriage engulfed in flames.
