Nitobe preached the importance of 'Rectitude or Justice' (Gi), which is the most strict code in Bushido, and 'Courage' (Yu), the bravery to execute it. 'Rectitude' is the 'backbone' of the warrior, hating cowardly behavior and resolutely following the right path, while 'Courage' is not about mere violence but 'the spirit to boldly take right action to uphold justice,' aligning with the Confucian saying: 'To see what is right and not to do it is want of courage.'
