Entering Dewa Province, Basho visited Ryushakuji (Yamadera), a steep mountain temple covered in lush trees. In the dusk, while stillness dominated the entire mountain, Basho composed: 'Ah, the stillness—sinking into the rocks, the voice of the cicadas.' The loud chirping of the cicadas actually highlighted the overwhelming quietness of the mountain temple, expressing a mystical sensation where the sound seemed to seep deep into the rocky cliffs.
