'Sarashina Diary' (Sarashina Nikki) is a peak of kana diary literature written by the daughter of Sugawara no Takasue in the mid-Edo (actually mid-Heian) period, chronicling her childhood longing for fantasy and the sorrow of her harsh real life. Raised in the remote eastern province of Kazusa (modern Chiba Prefecture), the young author prayed daily to a life-sized Buddhist statue: 'I want to go to the capital, Kyoto, quickly, and lose myself reading all the countless stories there.'
