The artist arrived at a quiet hot spring inn called Nagoi deep in the mountains, starting an experiment of 'hi-ninjo' (non-human sentiment) where he avoided being drawn into the messy, realistic emotions of human relations and viewed everything solely as 'objective materials' for painting. To the artist, art was a 'sanctuary of the mind' to wrap real-world suffering and anger in an aesthetically aloof attitude and appreciate it.
