It was late afternoon one day. A single servant was waiting under the Rashomon gate for the rain to stop. Under the wide gate, there was no one else but this man. Having been dismissed by his master and having nowhere to go, he was panting in the abyss of a binary choice: to become a thief or to starve to death.
