ず is the classical negative form. Combined with に as '～ずに', it means 'without doing...', functioning exactly like '～ないで'. It attaches to the negative stem of verbs.

動詞の未然形（ナイ形と同じ接続）に付く打消の助動詞「ず」で、「〜ずに」の形で「〜ないで（付帯状況・方法の否定）」という意味になります（例：辞書を引かないで新聞を読む）。
