'The Courier for Hades' (Meido no Hikyaku) is a masterpiece of puppet theater written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon during the Edo period. Chubei, an adopted son of the Kameya courier house in Osaka, was a serious young man, but he met Umekawa, a courtesan of Shinmachi, fell deeply in love with her, and forgot his work to keep visiting her.
