'Ugetsu Monogatari' (Tales of Moonlight and Rain) is the highest masterpiece of Japanese classical gothic fiction (occult horror), written in the late Edo period by Akinari Ueda. In the story 'Asaji ga Yado' (The House Amid the Reeds), a man named Katsushiro living in Shimosa Province leaves his beloved wife Miyagi at their home to set off for the capital to make a fortune in business.
