Arriving at Hiraizumi, Basho gazed upon the ruins of the dreams of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, who once reached the peak of prosperity here, and Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who met a tragic end. Standing before the lonely field overgrown with summer grass, he composed the famous verse 'Ah, summer grasses! / All that remains / of soldiers' dreams' and shed tears.
