'The Five-Story Pagoda' (Goju no To) is an extremely prestigious masterpiece written by Koda Rohan in the Meiji period, depicting the 'pride' and 'artistic soul' of traditional Japanese carpenters. Jubei, a carpenter who was skilled but quiet and clumsy at making his way in the world, was mocked by those around him as 'Nossori' (slowpoke) because he was slow, but he strongly desired to build the 'five-story pagoda' to be erected at Chojuji Temple in Yanaka with his own hands.
