Sometime after the marriage, Namiko fell ill with tuberculosis (lung disease), which was considered an 'incurable illness' at that time. Her husband, Takeo, cared for her deeply and nursed her gently. However, with the outbreak of the First Sino-Japanese War, Takeo, as a navy officer, had to deploy on a warship to a distant battlefield.
