'Diary of a Vagabond' (Horoki) is an autobiographical novel written by Fumiko Hayashi in the Showa period, beginning with the highly lyrical and dramatic lines: 'I am a vagabond by fate. I have no hometown. My hometown was the dark night inside the basket on the back of my parents' peddling.' From her childhood, Fumiko moved from place to place, cultivating a tough vitality to survive within the bottom of society.
