One night, while the head priest was away, a mysterious samurai in armor appeared before Hoichi. The samurai declared, 'A lord of high rank wishes to hear your Tale of the Heike,' and led Hoichi away. Hoichi recited the Battle of Dan-no-ura in a grand, spacious hall, hearing the weeping voices of many people around him. From then on, Hoichi kept it secret and went out every night to play the Biwa.
