An adverb meaning "(cannot) possibly" or "by no means". It is used to strongly emphasize that something is impossible or far beyond one's ability, expectation, or imagination. It must always be used with a negative expression, such as 〜ない, 〜できない, or 〜無理だ. Example: There is so much to do, I can't possibly finish by tomorrow. (やることが多すぎて、明日までには到底終わらない。)

「どうやっても」「絶対に」という意味で、ある事柄が不可能であることを強く強調する副詞。常に「〜ない」「〜できない」「〜無理だ」といった否定の言葉と一緒に使われる。「到底〜肯定文」の形では使わない。例文：彼の要求には到底応じられない。
