'The Makioka Sisters' (Sasameyuki) is the greatest saga novel in Japanese literary history, written by Junichiro Tanizaki in the Showa period, portraying the elegant lives and signs of decline of the wealthy Makioka family's four sisters in pre-war Osaka and the Hanshin area. The four sisters—tsuruko, Sachiko, Yukiko, and Taeko—lived in beautiful traditions, and the story progresses centering on the 'omiai' (matchmaking marriage proposals) of the gentle and introverted third sister, Yukiko.
