As he progressed to high school and university, Yozo's clownish mask twisted further. He came to seek temporary escapes in leftist movements, alcohol, and relationships with women. One night, on the beach of Kamakura, he attempted double suicide with Tsuneko, a café waitress who similarly carried life's despair. However, tragically, Tsuneko alone died, while Yozo alone survived.
