「もしもし」 is the standard Japanese greeting used exclusively on the telephone when answering a call or checking if the other person can hear you. It is derived from the verb 「申す」 (mousu - to speak humbly). It is not used for face-to-face greetings.

電話(でんわ)での通話(つうわ)開始時(かいしじ)や、回線(かいせん)の調子(ちょうし)を確かめる(たしかめる)時(とき)に使われる(つかわれる)専用(せんよう)の挨拶(あいさつ)表現(ひょうげん)です。謙譲語(けんじょうご)である「申す(もうす)」の言い回し(いいまわし)に由来(ゆらい)しています。対面(たいめん)の会話(かいわ)では使いません(つかいません)。
