At the end of the story, on a dry night, a fire breaks out in a silkworm cocoon warehouse in the hot spring town. As the flames soar, Shimamura and Komako rush to the scene, and Yoko's body falls into the air from the second floor of the burning building. Komako screams, holding Yoko in her arms. Faced with the extreme beauty and tragedy, Shimamura stands paralyzed, feeling the Milky Way above 'flowing down inside him with a roar.'
