Invited by his friend Yojiro Sasaki, Sanshiro began to attend literary and artistic gatherings in Tokyo. He was now forced to struggle in the gap between three worlds. The first was the peaceful world where his mother lived in his hometown; the second was the quiet world of academic learning at the university; and the third was the brilliant, stimulating modern world in which Mineko and the others lived. Sanshiro's heart fluctuated violently between these worlds.
