男は堂々とした佇まいで馬を引き、女は市女笠を被って馬に乗っていた。

It was yesterday afternoon, on my way to Seki-no-shimizu, that I happened to see that pitiful couple. The man wore a long sword, carried a bow and arrows, and led the horse with a truly grand demeanor. On the horse's back rode the woman, wrapped in an ichimegasa (straw hat with a veil), and her profile, glimpsed through the gaps of the hanging veil swaying in the wind, was fleeting and beautiful. I had no way of knowing, not being a deity or Buddha, that they would meet with such a tragedy just a few hours later. Yet, the sight of those two remains burned into my mind and will not leave.
