'The Love Suicides at Sonezaki' (Sonezaki Shinju) is an immortal milestone of traditional Japanese puppet theater (Ningyo Joruri) written by Monzaemon Chikamatsu in the Edo period, based on a real suicide incident that occurred in Osaka. Tokubei, a serious apprentice at a soy sauce shop, and Ohatsu, a beautiful courtesan of the Temmaya in Shinchi, were deeply in love. However, Tokubei was placed in a harsh situation, forced by his uncle to accept an unwanted marriage proposal, and pressed to return money when he refused.
