Last year, the students at Midori Junior High School started a new project. They decided to make a school garden. Before the project, there was only an empty dirt field behind the gym. The science teacher, Mr. Brown, suggested planting vegetables and flowers there. First, the students picked up all the rocks and trash from the field. Then, they brought good soil and planted seeds. They worked in the garden every Tuesday and Thursday after school. They grew tomatoes, carrots, and sunflowers. In the summer, the students had a big problem. It did not rain for three weeks, and the plants became very dry. The students had to carry water from the school building to the garden every day. It was hard work, but they did not give up. In the fall, they collected many delicious vegetables. They used the tomatoes and carrots to make soup for the school festival. Everyone loved the soup. Now, the students are planning to plant strawberries next year. They learned that growing food takes a lot of time and effort, but it is very fun.
