Lost Passport Process (パスポートの紛失 - Pasupōto funshitsu)
The emergency process required when you lose your passport in Japan. You must visit a police station to obtain a 'Lost Property Certificate' before applying for a temporary travel document at your embassy.
One of the most stressful tourist scenarios. Because Japan strictly enforces immigration laws, travelling without a passport must be resolved immediately by coordinating police reports with embassy paperwork.
1. Go to a Koban/police station, file a 'Lost Property Report', and get the 'Receipt Number' (Juri-bangō). 2. Contact your country's Embassy in Tokyo to apply for an emergency passport or 'Travel Document'.
