決定的なニュアンスの違い・使い分け
英語の「unexpectedly」を日本語で表現する際、思いのほか と 期せずして では明確なニュアンスの使い分けが存在します。
思いのほか は主に「おもいのほか (omoi no hoka)（N2）」として使われ、Indicates that something turned out differently or to a greater or lesser degree than one had anticipated. Can convey pleasant or unpleasant surprise.を指します。
一方、期せずして は「きせずして (kisezu shite)（N2）」として使用され、An adverbial phrase indicating that something happened without being planned or expected. More formal than 偶然 (guuzen). (前もって期待したり計画したりしていなかったのに、偶然に何か出来事が起こる様子を表します。)を表現します。アメリカ人学習者が直訳で最も間違えやすいポイントですので、違いを意識しましょう。
