決定的なニュアンスの違い・使い分け
英語の「public」を日本語で表現する際、公衆 と 世論 では明確なニュアンスの使い分けが存在します。
公衆 は主に「こうしゅう (kōshū)（N2）」として使われ、Refers to the general, undifferentiated public. Often used in terms like 公衆電話 (public phone), 公衆衛生 (public health). More abstract than 市民. (特定せず、一般の人々全体を指します。公衆電話、公衆衛生などの複合語でよく使われます。市民よりも抽象的です。)を指します。
一方、世論 は「よろん / せろん (yoron / seron)（N1）」として使用され、Refers to the collective opinion of many people on a particular issue. 'Yoron' is more commonly used than 'seron'. (ある問題に対する多くの人々の総意を指します。「世論（よろん）」の方が「世論（せろん）」よりも一般的です。)を表現します。アメリカ人学習者が直訳で最も間違えやすいポイントですので、違いを意識しましょう。
