決定的なニュアンスの違い・使い分け
英語の「look」を日本語で表現する際、見下ろす と 直視 では明確なニュアンスの使い分けが存在します。
見下ろす は主に「みおろす (miorosu)（N2）」として使われ、Physically looking down from a high place, or metaphorically looking down on someone (with contempt). The latter implies a sense of superiority. (高い場所から下を見る物理的な意味と、他人を軽蔑する意味の比喩的な意味がある。後者は優越感を示す。)を指します。
一方、直視 は「ちょくし (chokushi)（N1）」として使用され、Can be literal (looking directly) but is more often metaphorical (facing reality, a problem, the truth). Implies courage or confronting something difficult.を表現します。アメリカ人学習者が直訳で最も間違えやすいポイントですので、違いを意識しましょう。
